In March 1995, Zhenping county was jointly named as the "hometown of jade carving" in China by 5 departments, including the Ministry of Agriculture, the State Council Development and the Research Center.

The industry of jade carving in Zhenping dates back to over 4,000 years ago. Nowadays, jade carving has become a pillar industry in Zhenping, covering 85 percent of Zhenping's villages and towns. There are 11,000 processing enterprises of all types, with 114,000 employees in this industry in Zhenping alone. Its annual output has reached 640 million yuan ($104.32 million).
