Internet Plus strategy boosts farm product sales

(chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2016-08-11

The farmers in Nanyang's Tanghe county, Henan province, have seen their incomes rise considerably in recent years, thanks to the application of the Internet Plus Agriculture strategy.

Promoted by the central government in 2015, the strategy aims to boost the upgrading and transformation of traditional agriculture. As a result, Tanghe was designated as a provincial-level rural e-commerce demonstration county.

"We don't need to worry about the sales," said a local farmer named Qin Shishuang. "In the past, one duck egg cost less than 1 yuan ($0.15) but now, with the help of online marketing, it has doubled to 2 yuan each," he said.

Qin also pointed out that online marketing helps to develop the brand of his duck eggs, bringing in extra annual sales of more than 2 million yuan. Peach farmer, Zhang Yachao, took advantage of the Internet strategy and has attracted crowd funding for his products. As of now, he has received more than 60,000 yuan and sold nearly 20,000 kilograms of fresh peaches, surpassing his target of 50,000 yuan.

In recent years, Tanghe has invested a lot in e-commerce and online marketing training for local farmers. The county has launched 47 e-commerce training sessions which have attracted more than 2,600 people.

Statistics show that currently, the county is home to 1,300 e-commerce enterprises, 1,500 new-registered online stores and more than 10,000 farmer entrepreneurs.
