Nanyang launches festival in honor of ancient strategist

The annual Zhuge Liang Cultural Tourism Festival kicked off at Wuhou Memorial Temple, part of the Wolonggang tourist attraction in Nanyang, Henan province, on Sept 28.

The opening coincided with the 1,782nd anniversary of the death of Zhuge Liang, a famous strategist and ancient scholar from ancient China.

Zhuge spent most of his life prior to his military service in Nanyang. The city is famed for being mentioned at the beginning of the widely read article Chu Shi Biao (Memorial on Going to War) that Zhuge wrote. The article is partly the reason that he rose to fame for his diligent service to China.

The worship activity of Zhuge has a long history dating back to AD 234 and was promoted by Emperor Jiajing of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

The festival has been held in Nanyang 11 times and has improved year on year. It plays a vital role demonstrating the city's long history and rich culture, and reinvigorating the local tourism sector.

This year's festival included a commemoration ceremony, temple fair, creative products exhibition, folk artistic performance and a forum featuring Zhuge Liang-related cultural heritages.

Local government officials, staff working on cultural promotion and scholars, including famous local writer Ling Jiefang, attended the event and expressed their deep respect for Zhuge and their admiration for the culture. Some 1,000 residents wore traditional costumes and gave a reading of Chu Shi Biao to get the festival underway.

"Zhuge Liang-related culture is a tremendous treasure for us," said a Nanyang representative working for Counselors' Office of the State Council.

"All Nanyang residents should carry forward his spirit and build Nanyang into a more civilized city with this kind of spirit."
