Nanyang improves its waterways

By Huang Chenkuang(chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2016-12-08

Nanyang's rivers and waterways are currently undergoing extensive programs designed to improve sewage interception, build dams and floodgates, as well as green-up the river via landscaping.

There are six rivers in the Henan province city subject to the program; they are the city moat, Hancheng, Wenliang, Meixi, Sanli and Shierli rivers.

The Hancheng River flows for nearly 8 kilometers through the city with 5 km of tributaries. The government has invested 275 million yuan ($40 million) toward building a 20-km-long sewage interception pipe, two containment pools, two dams, and three steel floodgates, as well as extra pathways, balustrades and green belts along the riverbank.

By the end of 2016, the sewage interception pipe will be finished, along with 60 percent of the waterways project. Also by that time, camphor trees, platanus, and weeping willows will have been planted along the rivers' sides.

The city moat, which flows for 9 km, will undergo a dredging program in late December. In preparation, waste and sludge has been cleared, and water plants planted to improve the water quality.

The program to improve Wenliang River is 95 percent finished, with 5,685 meters of sewage pipes laid, 52 meters of cultural walls built and an extra five public toilets added. The programs on Meixi and Sanli River are 51 and 49 percent complete, respectively. The improvement program for Shierli River is scheduled to start around Dec 20.
