Diverted water flows from Xichuan to Beijing

An activity demonstrating the cleanliness of the water being channeled in the central route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project was held by the Construction Administration Bureau in Xichuan on Dec 12 to celebrate the second anniversary of its opening.

The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is a multi-decade mega infrastructure project, channeling 44.8 billion cubic meters of fresh water annually from the Yangtze River in southern China to the more arid and industrialized north through a three canal system -- the eastern route, central route and western route.

As the starting point as well as the core water source area on the central route, Xichuan county in Nanyang, Henan province, has gained wide recognition for its role in the project.

Dozens of workers collected water samples from different sections of the Danjiangkou Reservoir, one of the main water sources, and tested the water quality through various indexes.

With the water tested as qualified drinking water, the samples were taken to the border of Taocha in east Danjiangkou accompanied by a banner saying "To share water from the same river, is to share the same Chinese dream".

The water sample will be transported along the route from Xichuan, and is scheduled to arrive at Beijing after its 1,432-km, 19-day journey.

Over the last few years, the Nanyang government and related departments have taken various measures to improve the water quality for diversion, implementing a strict control system, greening-up neighboring regions and shutting down polluting factories.

According to the Construction and Administration Bureau of South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route Project, the middle route has channeled 6.25 billion cubic meters of fresh water since it was put into operation in 2014, benefiting 470 billion people along the route.

More than 1.1 million people in Nanyang have benefitted from the 5,000 cubic meters water which has flown through the city in the past two years.
