Nanyang civilian rescue team among nation's best

Updated: 2018-02-01

Nanyang Blue Sky Rescue Team has completed 86 rescue missions in cooperation with local government departments since its founding in November 2014, saving the lives of at least 30 people, Nandu Morning Paper reported.

Blue Sky Rescue (BSR), one of China's largest nonprofit civilian rescue organizations, held its 10th anniversary in Beijing in mid-December 2017. Nanyang stood out from among the 427 teams and was honored as one of the nation's top 10. Nearly 90 percent of the team's rescue operations were due to drowning. In addition to rescue missions, it also holds public fire and drowning prevention sessions. Every April to October, BSR team members are on duty in the Baihe River area.

The Nanyang BSR Team has 35 permanent members and more than 100 volunteers from all walks of life.

Fan Haitao, commander of the Nanyang BSR Team, has been devoted to the wellbeing of the public since 2014. In June 2015, more than 20 tourists trapped on a small island in the Baihe River due to a violent storm were carried safely back to shore by Fan and his 18 team members using rubber dinghies. Fan has also been to neighboring cities such as Anyang, Luoyang and Xinyang to carry out rescue operations.

Jin Sansong from Nanzhao county makes a living repairing electric bicycles. He spends seven to eight days each month on rescue duty for BSR. "I repair bicycles for a living; I take part in BSR because it gives me a sense of purpose," Jin responded when asked why he joined the team.

Zhao Qingsong, a pleasure boat operator along the Baihe River, joined the Nanyang BSR team in November 2017. Although new to the team, he has already saved many lives (mostly from drowning) stretching back all the way to 2001." I joined the team to help people. Life is much more valuable than money," Zhao said.
