The Nanyang Environmental Protection Bureau will continue to safeguard the city's blue sky, clear water and clean land in 2018, during which it pledges to have 227 days recorded with excellent or fine air quality.

The average concentration of PM2.5 is expected to fall below 53 mcg per cubic meter this year, and that of PM10 is set to drop below 92 mcg per cubic meter.

To achieve that, Nanyang will push forward the upgrading and transformation of local heavily polluting enterprises with installment of emission-reduction and pollution-control facilities. Meanwhile, it will tighten its control over volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and dust pollution.

In terms of water, the city will fully implement the river chief system, while setting up 28 sewage treatment stations and six wetland parks. The qualified rate for urban drinking water will rise to 96 percent. The water source of the south-to-north water diversion project will reach at least the Grade II national standard for surface water.

Local key enterprises and the leftover polluted areas will be closely monitored. The safe utilization rate of the polluted areas will exceed 90 percent, and the emission of heavy metals in key industries will achieve the target of zero growth this year.

Moreover, Nanyang will adopt an environmental impact assessment system to stimulate industrial upgrades. Air pollution, solid wastes, sewage treatment, drinking water and natural reserves will be five major aspects that are high on the government work agenda.
