The first stop of the China Lottery Cup & Tour of Henan, which was held in Xichuan county, Nanyang from March 31 to April 1, had nearly 2,000 cycling enthusiasts from over 10 countries such as Canada, Spain and Brazil vying for victory.

Contestants were divided into six groups under the road cycling elite and mountain bike categories. Setting off from Qushou Square, they had to ride 20 kilometers to dash through the water quality monitoring station, plus Huanhu, Zhoulou and Zhoutao roads before looping back to the starting point.

Eighteen medals, multiple consolation prizes and a total prize pool of 169,900 yuan ($26,964) were awarded to the group winners.

Up next, the contestants can continue their journey at 10 other stops within Henan province, which will take place over the span of six months, and then duke it out in Zhengzhou from Oct 13 to 14. The number of participants over the entire 12 stops is estimated to break the record of 60,000 set last year.

The China Lottery Cup & Tour of Henan was founded by the Henan Bicycling & Modern Pentathlon Administrative Center and Henan Bicycling Association in 2015 for the purpose of promoting fitness for all. It was honored with 23rd place on the Top 100 Chinese Sports Events list compiled by people.cn in 2016.
