First Emergency Safety Island comes to Nanyang campus

(chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2018-07-06

The Nanyang 120 Emergency Command Center set up an Emergency Safety Island at the Nanyang Institute of Technology (NIT) on July 5, the first of its kind in the city.

The "island" is a place for storing emergency medical equipment, such as automated external defibrillators (AED) and first-aid kits. It is meant to provide handy medical equipment for people suffering a sudden illness or injury.

An AED was donated to NIT on the same day. Different from the defibrillator used in medical institutions, an AED is a portable device that can treat sudden cardiac death through defibrillation. It is relatively easy for layperson to use if they are trained properly.

Every year, more than half a million people die of sudden cardiac death in China, and there is a successful rescue rate of less than one percent.

However, Zhang Yuchao, director of the Nanyang 120 Emergency Command Center, said that the success rate can be increased to 94 percent by using AEDs for defibrillation and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation within 4 minutes of a sudden cardiac death.

The use of AEDs was demonstrated by staff members from the emergency command center to NIT teachers and students at the donation ceremony.

This formed part of a campaign initiated by the Nanyang Health and Family Planning Commission, which aimed to improve rescue rates in rural areas, communities, enterprises, schools and families.

Since the launch of the campaign on May 17, the Nanyang 120 Emergency Command Center has organized 33 training sessions on first-aid techniques, which were attended by more than 5,000 people.

Nanyang will further advance the cause by popularizing AEDs and the Emergency Safety Islands in crowded public places.
