A team from Nanyang Institute of Technology won the grand prize at the final of the First Global Chinese Cyber Security Skills Competition (CCSSC), People's Daily reported on Jan 8.

Sponsored by the Beijing Cyber Security Association, the competition aims to enhance cyber security awareness and the skills of Chinese people around the world, as well as to headhunt and train individuals with potential to become experts in this field.

Twenty-four teams from prestigious organizations and universities in 10 countries faced off in the Dec 15 final, where they were required to identify and resolve vulnerabilities in their GameBoxs while attacking others in an attack and defense format.

The Nanyang WPSEC team stood out among the competitors following a six-hour duel, taking home the trophy and prize money of 20,000 yuan ($3,063). Team NU1L from the Shandong Public Security Bureau finished second.

Yan Ming, director of the Information Security Committee of China Computer Federation, stressed the importance of information network security at the opening ceremony.
